I've always seen the cross as a cherished illusion and interchangeable with love because it is supposed to represent love's sacrifice, love's price, love's resurrection. Love is an illusion, yet we base our lives on it, some kill in the name of it, commit horrible atrocities based on narrow beliefs in it, and others would do willingly lay their lives down for it.
Is that not all the same things religious do for their symbols. So I suggest you make the symbol something strong that you believe in whether that's nature or earth or spirit or science or a happy face.
